Waterbending Photography

Photography Workshop and Waterbending at Winsam Studio

We’ve been doing photography workshops for well nigh ten years now. Our location is a house from the 1950’s, which is replete with beautiful backgrounds. There are trees and textured walls; wooden slats and natural soft lighting filtered by leaves.

One favorite theme for our workshoppers is Glamour Photography. By definition, this is the genre of photography tending towards the erotic without being pornographic. By means of styling, we add elements of fashion and surreal art, as well.

The term “Waterbending,” which was adopted by my playful workshoppers,  was derived from the Avatar TV series. A “waterbender” was someone who could control water, make it fly, and “bend” it to one’s desires.

Since we have a backyard to shoot in, we throw water at the model from discrete, selected angles. The speedlights behind the model, remotely triggered from our cameras, have colored gels taped to them, providing a cornucopia of colors for our photos.

We do the waterbending shots at the end of the workshop towards dusk. When the night has fallen, we are done. We are tired but we are sated, until the urge to create arises again in our chests.
